She doesn't have a clue by Jenny Elder Moke

Stacey Irving • March 14, 2025

My kind of debut

I just finished She doesn’t Have a clue by Jenny Elder Moke and here are my thoughts.

This book is so... spongy!! I can't think of a better word... The whole book is weird like a sponge but you can’t help getting satisfaction from squeezing it… Kate is... a lot. She is a walking catastrophe. I seriously don't understand why she went to the wedding of her ex.. And that was the least bad idea she had in the whole book.

So Kate is an author and her ex is getting married in a lavish affair on a private island… It gets worse when the bride-to-be is poisoned and all signs point to Kate doing it.

She can’t help trying her hand at amateur sleuthing. The characters are all insane… They are all really colorful. I think the best part of the whole book is how well all the characters were written. I can see where the book was going with the sleuthing and romance but it was all a bit awkward haha. It was a train wreck of a book but I couldn’t help clinging on for dear life and wondering what was going to happen next.

The writing was awesome. I shook my head at how dappy Kate is and I wish I had connected with her a bit more, she felt like the kind of person I would avoid haha but I actually enjoyed the heck out of this book. The audio narration was quite brilliant. I have never read a book quite like it and I definitely need more of it. It was an epic debut novel.

4.25 stars

Yeah I’m still thinking about this book so you know it’s gotta be your next book!

I just finished The Love Haters by Katherine Center and here are my thoughts. Katie has gotten herself between a rock and a hard place.. they are laying people off at work but she’s been given a lifeline.. to do the video productive of hutch.. a coast guard.. trouble is she lied about being able to swim. She didn’t go down there expecting to feel things but they are both closed off from love and she is starting to fall back in love with herself. Genre - Contemporary Romance Date of Release - May 20th 2025 Publisher - @stmartinpress Format - audio and hardcover and the narration was amazing! There is something you should know about Katherine’s books is that she always puts a moral in there and it will resonate with you. It’s always more than just a romance. It’s a book of self discovery too. I loved the characters. Katie is so relatable. All the characters are perfect! I was sucked right into Hutch’s world and I didn’t want to leave. The book was beautifully written and the story just flowed. It gave me all the feels! It made me laugh, it made my eyes well with tears. It had some really tender moments and I was fully invested in the outcome. The ending was brilliant too. You won’t be sorry for picking up this book! If you love heartwarming rom-coms, grab this one next month! 5 stars Thank you St Martin’s press and @netgalley for my gifted copies #thelovehaters #katherinecenter #romcom #bookreview #igbooks #igreader #bookish #smpinfluencer #bookishreel #bookalorian #booksbooksbooks #romancereader #booklove #readersofig #readingallday

I just finished Good Bad Mother by Anya Mora and here are my musings. Amelia Sterling has it all. The perfect husband, the amazing house and a cute little baby she adores… It doesn’t matter if her in-laws look down on her… That’s the least of her worries… Her past is coming back to bite her in the butt and keeping it buried is getting harder by the minute. It was slow… Like really slow. I thought the plot was super clever and there was some real excellence in the writing.. BUT… It was repetitive. I felt likeI could have been listening to the same chapter every 4 chapters… She was literally spiralling over her past and we didn’t really seem to get anywhere. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters because they were all jerks It was a real shame because the narration was good and the story was good. I just think more could have been done had all the repetitiveness had been eradicated and I still don’t understand what was up with her husband…. I don’t want to spoil it but WTAF. Having said that, I did actually enjoy the book. 3.75 stars Thank you @netgalley and @bookouture for my gifted ALC #thrillereader #mysteryreader #mysterybook #thrillerbook #bookouture #netgalley #audiobookreader #audiobookreviews #bookalorian #audiobooks #audiobooklover #bookinfluencer #readingallday #libbyreader #fictionaddiction #psychologicalthriller #bookishreviews #bookblog #lionessofliteracy #bookblogger #thequeensofcrime #goodbadmother

I just finished The Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict and here are my thoughts. It’s 1930 and 5 of the greatest women crime writers want their props… So they decide to solve an actual murder…It’s got all the makings of a lock door mystery and the police are stumped! So the author takes 5 of the most notable women crime fiction writers of the 30s…Dorothy L. Sayers, Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy and makes one of the most exciting mystery novels I have read in a long time! It was exhilarating. May Daniels, a nurse, is found murdered but no one saw her leave a bathroom with one exit.. I was enthralled!! It was pretty well paced for a mystery too! The plot was amazing and centered around the real life Detection club that included all 5 of these crime writers! I went down a rabbit hole about it. The writing was quite excellent and the narrator did a super amazing job of bringing these epic women to life for me. 4 stars Thank you @netgalley for my gifted ALC #thrillereader #mysteryreader #mysterybook #thrillerbook #bookouture #netgalley #audiobookreader #audiobookreviews #bookalorian #audiobooks #audiobooklover #bookinfluencer #readingallday #libbyreader #fictionaddiction #psychologicalthriller #bookishreviews #bookblog #lionessofliteracy #bookblogger #thequeensofcrime #goodbadmother

I just finished Shaedes of Power by Jenny Grimes and here are my musings! Genre - Romantasy Date of Release - March 11th 2025 Publisher - Aethon Books Opal doesn’t expect things to turn out the way they do.. she witnesses a human being attacked by a beast from the shadowlands in the human realm and she takes him with her to the faerie realm. She expects a lot of backlash as a virtual outcast but nothing could have prepared her for taking one of the seats her parents once held… and the prince of darkness wants to come out of the shadows and he isn’t above kidnapping to get his own way. If you are looking for a faerie series that has world building in spades??? This.. is.. it. I was blown away with the amount of detail that went into the faerie world and the shadowlands. Honestly it was impressive. How does an author fit in a solid starting storyline, world building and set you up with a cast of characters without missing anything? Ask Jenny Grimes because she managed to keep the perfect balance and did it while holding a decent pace. It’s a tad annoying. I have nothing to criticize and I always have something critical to say. I massively enjoyed this story and I know if you like fantasy reads.. you will too! 4.5 stars! Thank you to @jennygrimes.author for My gifted copy! I just finished Splinter Effect by Andrew Ludington and here are my thoughts. Firstly, the audiobook was a tad bland but I did get used to it after a while and got sucked in. We are introduced to Rabbit Ward… A time traveling Archaeologist who has gone into the past to find a long lost menorah (candelabrum used in Jewish worship) from Ancient Rome. Things couldn’t have gone more wrong from the second he arrives and when a rival, Helen arrives to find the very same item… He knows there's a mole in his organization… Yet the only way to find the Menorah might be to work with the very person who is here to steal from him… Genre - Time Travel - Science Fiction Date of Release - March 18th 2025 Publisher - @minotaur_books It was an interesting book. It was a tad monotonal but I think that was done on purpose. Rabbit is very rigid and I think the tone of the book was to match him. I didn’t much care for that but I did get used to it. The plot is insane!!! I loved the storyline! The author did a phenomenal job of creating this story and I couldn’t find a hole in it. Not one plot hole… That right there is incredible because the story has a ton going on and most of the time there is something in a book that doesn’t fit or get explained.. Not here so bravo! I liked Rabbit ok. I think he was growing on me towards the end of the book but I did love Helen! I know I'm not supposed to have warm feelings for the “bad guy” but I couldn’t help it. I am really glad this is book 1 and it’s a debut novel so honestly, if this is the level the author is already writing at… I am excited to see what comes next. I adored all the sights of Rome and all the wonderful backstory delivered in a really clever way. Honestly the only things I can say about the book is the tone was a tad off for me and it could have had a slightly faster pace but these things are like a grain of rice compared to how excellent this book is. 4.5 stars! I know you are looking at the genre and thinking… I don’t read sci-fi… It’s really so much more than that! It’s a Historical Fiction, Adventure, Mystery Thriller so give it a go! I just finished A Killing Cold by Kate Alice Marshall and here are my musings. Theo and Connor are excited for their future and when Connor brings Theo to his family's winter retreat… She is a little apprehensive. It’s only been 6 months and the threatening messages haven't dissuaded her either but there is something eerily familiar about the place… A place she should never have seen but then why is there a photo of herself as a child hidden in a part of the retreat no one is called to go into anymore? The whole story was a tad far fetched but I couldn’t help getting sucked right in. It was twisty and turning and it was totally gripping! The narration was really well done and I felt absolutely connected and invested in the story… Downside? The ending. If you can suspend your disbelief… You will likely enjoy the heck out of it but… I still just can’t with Connor. I feel like the jokes on me. The writing was amazing and I wish the ending had gone a different way, a better way of tying it all together because all the elements were there. I also don’t care much for snow stuff so when I reread it… I will read in the summer haha. 4 stars Thank you @netgalley for my gifted ALC Check out my bookish podcast @youtube.com/@thewrightkindofbooktalk #netgalley #audiobooks #audiobooklover #bookinfluencer #bookalorian #readingallday #libbyreader #thedollhouseacademy #thrillerreader #fictionaddiction #psychologicalthrilleer #bookishreviews #bookblog #lionessofliteracy #bookblogger #thekillingcold

I just finished Slayers, Everyone of us - How one girl in all the world showed us how to hold on… From the Podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer - hosts Kristin Russo and Jenny Owens Youngs. This is why, going in blind on a book, sometimes… doesn’t go well for me. I thought this book was going to be about them pulling apart and discussing buffy the vampire slayer and yeah… No, that's totally not what it's about. Both the hosts used to be together and broke up.. They did the podcast together on their shared love of buffy and maybe the podcast has more Buffy the vampire slayer in it but this book was pretty much political. The way they felt when Trump was inaugurated the first time… The fears they had for what that meant for the LGBTQ community. It’s really hard to rate a book that didn’t match the expectations of the book. It was literally a memoir about a marriage, a divorce, and a podcast about Buffy the Vampire Slayer with both people writing it together. I definitely am not the target audience because I wanted more buffy but If I was a listener… I think this book had some really great aspects about it and you could see how much thought they put into building a podcast from scratch. One of the hosts on the audio didn’t feel like they were as connected, I think it was Jenny that felt like she didn’t really want to be there… What was my takeaway? That they made the podcast work even after the split and are still friends and that's kinda beautiful. They still support each other, just in a different way and for that, I am glad I listened and read the book. I did immersion reading on this one. First time ever… It was a new experience but I want to thank the hosts and @stmartinspress for including me in this experience. I will be checking out the podcast now and maybe I will come back to the book once I get to know Jenny and Kristin on a new level. 3.5 stars #slayer #bufferingthevampireslayer #lgbtq #podcast #nonfiction #memoir #booklover #bookreview #bookishreview #bookalorian #bookishpodcaster #readersofig #goodreads #kindlebooks #audiobooks #paperbackreader #readreadread

I just finished Close Your Eyes and Count to 10 by Lisa Unger and here is my review. Adele needs something to give… After her husband disappeared, the FBI are still looking for him… She can barely pay the bills… Her son convinces her to the ultimate game of hide and seek in an abandoned hotel.. For a very large prize… The game is going to be fought with peril and something more is happening… Something the organizers were not anticipating. OH this book was on FIREEEEEEE!!! Adele's husband was caught embezzling from his own company. That was wild enough but the organizer of the games is shrouded in controversy after someone went missing on another game of hide and seek. The pace was incredible and the tone of the book was so dark I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face! I wasn’t thrilled with all the POVs. I get why it was done but it made me enjoy the book a little less. I thought the ending could have been more exciting too. It fell a bit flat for me there. I thought all the messaging on social media was a really strong part of the plot. It was super clever but it was a tad slower than I normally want in my thrillers but even with having said what I said…. I really enjoyed it. The narration was top notch and I really got sucked into it. Tighten up that ending to be a bit more exciting and it would have been the best of the year. 4 stars Thank you @netgalley for my gifted ALC #closeyoureyesandcountto10 #lisaunger #thrillereader #mysteryreader #mysterybook #thrillerbook #bookouture #netgalley #audiobookreader #audiobookreviews #bookalorian #audiobooks #audiobooklover #bookinfluencer #readingallday #libbyreader #fictionaddiction #psychologicalthriller #bookishreviews #bookblog #lionessofliteracy #bookblogger #thequeensofcrime #goodbadmother

I just finished One Final Turn - Electra McDonnell #5 by Ashley Weaver and here are my thoughts. This is the final installment. Publisher - @minotaur_books Genre - Historical Mystery I almost didn't read it. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye… It was wonderfully bittersweet though. Electra is one of my favorite FMCs.. She has come so far in this series.. She starts out cracking safes and she ends up cracking safes as a spy! The book starts out with Electra reeling from Ramsey firing her. Those two are hot and cold soooo we start in the arctic part of their relationship. The will they won’t they has been maddening but it is all tied up by the end of the book. You can really see how Electra has grown over the series and she held it together while they were rescuing the POWs. The tension in this book was crackling! So much action and sighhhh the romance. A lot going on in one installment but its done with such gravitas! I’m not going to lie… It did feel a bit rushed in places. I think another 2 books would have wrapped things up better but the author did an amazing job of ending the series to a satisfactory level. The writing is phenomenal and I felt all the feels while reading. Honestly, you should start this series from the beginning. You could try it as a standalone but the magic is in the characters and you need the whole story. I feel like I am losing the best group of friends but all good things have to end sometime. I just didn’t expect it to be now… 4 stars. I just finished The Dollhouse Academy by Margarita Montimore and wow… check this review out. What do two women who’ve never met have in common? They are losing themselves in the dollhouse academy. Ramona and Grace want nothing more than to be part of the Dollhouse academy and when their dreams come true, they don’t realize just how dark it all is. They are both being pushed to their limits to become superstars but something sinister is happening at the academy and Ivy, their idol knows but will she do anything before it’s too late? OK, this book was awesome. I think, had the book been written as more of a thriller… It would have been the best book of 2025. Everyone is worried about being replaceable so working yourself into insanity is the norm. I love books like this. With dark secrets, this book had my hooked from the first line. The plot was one of the best I have read in ages. The dark things you have to accept to become famous. The people you have to forget. Someone decides what you eat, what you look like, where you are supposed to be and when… It’s insanity! Vitamins to keep you “compliant”... Working yourself to death. Oh man the characters were amazing and I was happy to be on this wild ride! Definitely a wonderfully narrated audiobook. 4.5 stars Thank you @netgalley for my gifted ALC check out my bookish podcast @youtube.com/@thewrightkindofbooktalk #netgalley #audiobooks #audiobooklover #bookinfluencer #bookalorian #readingallday #libbyreader #thedollhouseacademy #thrillerreader #fictionaddiction #psychologicalthriller #bookishreviews #bookblog #lionessofliteracy #bookblogger
