Dark Queen Rising by Paul Doherty
Stacey • August 6, 2019
England during the 14th and 15th Century was a bloody mess of wars and a pretty serious game with the throne. The 100 years war really took its toll on England and all its people. The war of the roses, the infamous battle between the Lancastrians and the Yorks was the pivotal turning point for England as a whole.
Fast forward to the tail end of the war and we find Margaret Beaufort. Ruthless, intelligent and the matriarch of the Tudor dynasty, knows she could never take the throne in her own birth right so pins all her dreams on her malleable son Henry.
During this time being a Lancaster may as well be wearing a bright neon sign saying traitor to the throne right here. This still did not stop Lady Margaret.
I adore historical fiction. It’s been my go to genre for quite some time. I am well versed in the Tudor dynasty and have a vast knowledge base starting with the war of the roses, all the way to the death of Elizabeth I. I half wondered if this would be a blessing or a curse and it turned out to be a curse for the author. There are some pretty acute inaccuracies in the historical parts of the book. They did grate on me a bit, I have to be honest but for for the most part, the writing is good enough for me to overlook the inconsistencies. The beginning of the book didn’t flow well for me, way too much talking and no story building. I hated that. Building into the story would have been better. I rather felt that the first chapter was picking up from somewhere else. It felt like I was starting a book from the middle of the story rather than the beginning.
Margaret Beaufort comes across a little less of a tyrant in this rendition. The author gives her a certain motherly humanity that made her a little easier to swallow. I couldn’t imagine having my only son so far away from me and not knowing if he was going to stay safe or if he was even alive. It must have taken its toll on Margaret being in fear constantly. I really can’t help wondering if the hardening of her heart started as young girl with no stabilty, rather than from all the upheaval with the realm.
When I read the synopsis for the book I was excited! A Tudor murder mystery!! How creative. I felt very let down with the whole story. The whole mystery surrounding the murders were not the star of the book as I was lead to believe. For me, if the part about the murders were removed from the summary, I would have gone in with a different mind set and I think you would have seen a very different review from me.
Instead this book is about a highly ambiguous woman with an ambition to rival any man. You never fully understand if it’s her love for her son that drives her or whether she loves the glory her son can give her by claiming the throne and ultimately, giving her the control of the realm.
‘She was determined to weave the web she wanted..’ That doesn’t sound like a woman who is just trying to navigate her way through a dark time in history. She is actively going against the grain and is putting her life and her sons in mortal danger in the process.
This book switches between the points of view of Margaret and Christopher Ulswicke. Ulswicke was one of only two people Margaret trusted in the world. I actually enjoyed his story more so than Margarets. He's funny, determined and could feel his need to do his very best. He was much more genuine a character than Margaret. He did what he did for the good of his mistress and for someone who kills people, was a much more believable human than Margaret comes across as. Other than the gruesome and overly descriptive deaths being described, there wasn’t much that stood out.
The pace of the book wanes a lot and other times you get far too much information thrown at you. I can still see the potential this book has but for a seasoned reader like me, it didn’t hold the water it should have. There were no twists and turns, nothing to drive you forward to continue to read. I did finish it. It was mediocre at best and a real let down for me. I did a happy dance when I first started to read it. I was excited. By the end I was just glad it was over.
I have never read any other of his work and in all honesty, I probably won’t be seeking his work out again. It’s a real shame that I didn’t have something better to say about this book. I really wanted to love it.
I would give it 2.5 stars out of 5. I even had to go and read parts again because my mind wandered and that never happens to me.
Sincerely, The Lioness

Book Review - Fiction - ARC - Small town - Rom Com - Forced Proximity I just finished It Seemed Like a Good Idea by Lauren Blakely and here are my musings. When Banks finds a beautiful woman in a bar.. He never imagines she will be his next job.. So we start with the meet-cute. Banks meets Riley. He saves her from a douche. They have drinks and decide to….. you know… He’s supposed to meet her in her room but a call and an email has him ghosting.. They tell you right here why. I would have liked that it was a mystery. To find out the why when Riley does and that was a major bummer for me. Whenever I read the word sweetheart.. I automatically go to the hunger games and Haymitch and it does not work for Me haha I hate miscommunication and he didn’t even miscommunicate, he literally didn’t even bother to talk face to face so it was hard to forgive him. I loved the lavender farm and I do have a bit of a soft spot for bodyguards… I did like the banter and the tension was tensioning. All in all it was a solid book 4 stars Thank you @netgalley for my gifted copy #bookalorian #bookpodcaster #bookcommunity #readersofig #bookinfluencer #bookblogger #bookbusiness #bookishpodcast

I was hooked… right from the prologue. I could tell right away I was going to love this book from the tone of the writing. You could feel the personality shining and I was hooked. Book Review - Fiction - ARC - Ebook- Dark comedy - Cozy Mystery - Anti hero I just finished I’m Not the Only Murderer in My Retirement Home by Fergus Craig and here are my musings. Carol is so glad to be leaving her tiny prison cell and take her place in a retirement home. Her serial killer life is in her rearview mirror…. What she doesn’t expect is for the place to be full of ex cops…. And when a police commissioner drops dead and people realize who she is… things get even more awkward… She knows she didn’t do it and now she has to prove she didn’t do it… without killing anyone. I just read the Thursday murder club so this book is right up my alley! I love the older sleuths and the fact that Carol is actually a criminal… Just really set this book into a new league. It was such a clever book! The pacing was slower and I think that’s ok for a book like this. It was well written and I was rooting for Carol the whole time. I enjoyed the dark comedy aspects of the book too. I really was charmed by the book and I highly recommend it if you like fun seniors who like to be arm chair detectives!! 4 stars Thank you to @berkleypub and @netgalley for my gifted copy QOTD do you think it would be fun to live in a retirement home? #bookish #booklover #bookinfluencer #booktok #readingallday #lionessofliteracy #bookishblog

I feel like the book started out really strong and just got better and better.. I did not adult all that day, crushed it in one sitting and I had a minor hangover for the next day. SJ has a brilliant writing style with a lot of her personality and humor emanating off the page. Did I care about the characters? Heck yes I did! Nathalia was incredible. She felt grounded and deep. Book review - ALC Audiobook - Mystery/psychological thriller - podcast mystery - Friends to lovers This Story Might Save Your Life by Tiffany Crum Benny and Joy host a podcast together.. Friends who give their listeners advice on, against all odds, survival. Joy having narcolepsy has helped build the podcast viewership up and her husband Xander has built their empire. Benny never expects to show up at their house one day to record and find the house empty… Smashed glass on the floor. The only thing shedding light on the mystery is Joy’s memoir… The police have locked on a target …. Benny… Will they find the couple alive? I love the cover of this book and it was literally all I knew going in. The audiobook was absolutely amazing (it was my BoTm pick too) and I fell right into the mystery! Having a podcast or 3 of my own, I loved that this one included a popular podcast. Gave me lofty ideals but hey, we all gotta dream! I loved the friendship between Benny and Joy. It was sweet. It wasn’t a faced pace mystery by any means, It took ages to get to the crux of the story but I wasn’t overly invested in what happened to Joy. I was more interested in what was going on with her and Benny haha. I think, had the mystery been more impactful.. It would have been so much better. It didn’t feel gripped to be honest but it didn’t take away from the book. Just don’t go in expecting this crazy mystery because that’s not what you are going to get. I liked the character development and I thought it was well written. All in all very enjoyable. 4 stars If you like books that give you all the feels. Grab it Thank you @netgalley for my gifted copy Qotd if you could have any skill.. what would you pick?
