I just reviewed
A botanist's guide to parties and poisons by Kate khavari.. Advanced readers copy
The book introduces us to Saffron, a research assistant and up and coming botanist. While attending a party the hostess is passes out and is whisked off to hospital. Much to Saffrons dismay, her mentor is arrested for poisoning Mrs. Henry, the wife of the upcoming expedition leader, something Saffron refusing to believe. The police has one lead, a plant no one will go near that her mentor, Dr Maxwell, has in one of the University greenhouses, as the attempted murder weapon.
Saffron with the reluctant help of Alexander Ashton, set about finding out what really happened that night. Will she uncover the truth before the criminal sets sail away from punishment or will she find herself in mortal danger instead?
The title hooked me so hard with this one and I was so excited to start it. Firstly, it is very well written. It flowed, it didn't drop the pace and it not once lost my attention.
Saffron is one heck of a young lady. Following in her dead fathers footsteps and working at the university that he worked for, she has very large shoes to fill. Being a woman in that time too, shows the level of courage and perseverance she had to have to make it to where she was. I felt the character development was very well done and I loved watching her meet the challenges she faced and the relationship blossoming with Alexander.
I felt the rest of the characters could have done with some of the same level of expansion. We learned very little of Alexander and nothing of the other characters. I don't know if that was done on purpose or not but I felt it would have rounded the story out more having more details on the lesser characters.
I felt there were some loose threads in the story that needed to tightened and they were left kind of hanging. It doesn't take from the story at all though, it literally just would have strengthen it in my opinion. Building a well rounded character base, is one of my top 3 things for a 5 star book.
I loved the whodunnit element that ran through the whole book! It has me guessing the whole time.
The author really weaved a tale of early blooming love while never losing sight of the base storyline. It was cleverly executed with a delicate balance in the writing. The plant knowledge was fascinating and really added to the dynamics of the book.
If you love a good mystery with a twist of romance.... This is the book for you.
4.5 stars out of 5.

Book review - Fiction - audiobook - sci-fi Artificial Truth by J.M. Lee When KC Kim, tech genius and creator of the top of the line AI dies of cancer, no one believes it and his widow Minju is looked upon with suspicion. 6 years on she moved on and remarried but she can’t help feeling like KC isn’t really gone. She sees him on her walk.. His fav custom shoes arrive at the house. Is KC reaching out from beyond the grave or the AI realm? This one was super intriguing. It was a bit bland with the structure and the tone of the book but the plot was super exciting. I found the characters massively lacklustre but it didn’t seem to matter because all the sci-fi stuff was the magic here. It was well paced too which makes up for the monotone of the writing. I found the science fiction parts to be fascinating. It felt realistic and it was both terrifying and exhilarating to know this could be our future one day. I enjoyed the narration and if you like sci-fi… you will enjoy this one. 4 stars Thank you @netgalley #bookinfluencer #bookinfluencing #bookblog #bookshblog #blogger #bookpodcast #podcaster #bookish #bookbusiness

Book Review - Fiction - Audiobook - Romance Never Over by Clare Gilmore Paige has the chance to be a songwriter but her songs lack real world emotion… In a shocking move she reaches out to her ex Liam… A man she has not had contact with in 4 years… She wants him to date her and break her heart. For some mental reason he agrees. 2 months of travelling for Liam’s work, sharing beds and remembering the past has old feelings reigniting but can she keep her eye on the prize? I thought the concept of this book was a little weird. Seeking out an ex to break your heart… An ex just going along with it.. Weird. Paige was a bit of a flake, easily led and I didn’t want that from this book. It took ages for me to settle in but once I did, I really did like it. The ending was good and the narration was amazing. It was different and it took some time but I am glad I read it. 3.5 stars Thank you @netgalley for my gifted copy #bookreview #bookishblogger #bookdragon #readersofig #reading

Book Review - Fiction - Young Adult - YA - Mystery - Thriller - Horror I just finished Night Terror by Vincent Ralph and here are my musings. What kind of maniacs hold up a bookstore? The kind looking for an urban legend.. A book… The Burning book. Something sinister comes out of the pages and it wants to feast on human flesh.. Can Noah and the other hostages make it out of the mall without unleashing a blood bath on their town? Brainnnnnnnsssssss zombiesssssssssssss brainnnnnnnnsssss haha If you have been subscribed for a while, then you know I did book 1 - Dead Fake and loved the vibes… This is book 2 and it was just as good a read. The best part is it works as a standalone so yay for the author being a rock star! This one does have more of the horror vibes opposed to the mystery/thriller that book one had going on. I dug it. I like horrors and it wasn’t insane either so if you don’t read a lot of horror, it won’t matter because it has that glossy fearstreet vibes. The pacing was phenomenal. The story kept moving and the pages kept getting flipped like I was Johnny 5 needing input. I was engrossed. I did find that the author played a fast and loose game with conventions within the genre but I actually loved it! It was clever, unique and something I will now expect whenever I pick up one of his books! This installment follows Noah and he was really well written. He didn’t have those teen-douche vibes and came across as a decent kid. LOVED THAT!!! I also highly enjoyed that the book was set in a creepy-ass mall. It was a solid follow up to my kind of YA series. I liked the messy… I liked the tone and I was 100% entertained. Cannot wait to see where this series goes next. ⭐ Rating: 4 Chaos level: 3 Thank you to @wednesdaybooks for my gifted copy and to @vincentralphwriter for bringing me zombies. Highly recommend! Book Review - Fiction - e-arc - Thriller - Mystery - Suspense I just finished Such a Perfect Family by Nalini Singh and here are my musings. It was love at first sight and a whirlwind marriage in vegas… Then the fire… Tavish only just got his wife out in time but she has been stabbed and the police are looking into him. They are wealthy… He is well known for bedding rich older women and then they died under suspicious circumstances.. He needs to clear his name but the family he just became part of has dark secrets and everything is coming to a head. OMG Tavish… That is a complex morally grey man like you wouldn’t believe. I spent the whole time wondering if he was unreliable or not. Very unsettling. What kind of a man marries in a matter of weeks…. Dates rich much much much older women… Weird right? It literally starts out the gate like BOOOOMMMMMMMM. He isn’t at the house when everyone is attacked and the house set on fire which makes him a prime suspect but the more he learns… ARGHHH. My fave parts… The POV of the detective who has his sights set on Tavish but isn’t working the current case. SO GOOD! It was so dark. It was a tad slow paced for my liking but MAN OH MAN it was so good! I was racing to find out what had happened! Real page turner!! Really solid writing, gripping and a solid ending. 4.5 stars Thank you @berkleypub for my gifted copy #bettyandbonnybookreviews #bookreview #bookalorian #bookblog #bookishblog #readerblog #booktalk #bookchat #thrillerbook

Book Review - Fiction - Audiobook - Coming of age - Contemporary Fiction Honeymoon Stage by Margaux Eliot Cassidy is due to get married… The idea of doing it on set… filling her with dread. She’s always been behind the scenes but her husband-to-be is a former child star and this would be the start of another celebreality show… A spin off from the one she worked on 5 years before… Cassidy still doesn’t understand what happened back then and she cannot move forward with her life until she uncovers what happened in the past. This was an interesting audio. It was a little messy in the way the book was formatted… It was hard to know what was current and what was past at first.. It was a slow burn of a story and I didn’t much care for any of the characters but I was quietly obsessed with what was going on. It was kinda like watching a reality tv show. Clever. I really enjoyed the ending. It was different for sure but I really got into it 4 stars #bookreview #bookish #booksbooksbooks #bookalorian #bookblog #bookishblog #bookreader

Book review - Fiction - psychological thriller - dark - twisty Dead in the Water by John Marrs Damon doesn’t expect to survive a near drowning and have his life flash before his eyes but that is what happens and now everywhere he looks… He sees a dead little boy. A face he doesn’t remember but can see it vividly. The obsession to know who this boy is and what it means… Becomes all he can see. The only way he can find the truth is to get close to death again. Dangerous and in need of help, he finds someone online willing to do what needs to be done… To help him die but the more he learns… The more his life begins to really unravel. OOOHH so much to unpack and I am so glad to see my most hated character from The Good Samaritan!! I was telling my cousin in our podcast I needed to see her get her just desserts and the dish was served!!! Something you should always know about John Marrs… He brings the information in slow deliberate steps… The more you learn the more it all makes sense. It was bone chilling! I love when he gives us sprinkles of easter eggs from other books of his and this one brought it in spades. UGH DAMON!!!! There is sooo much I don’t want to spoil but I NEED to talk about it but I will do my best to not say anything I wouldn’t want to read. He really gets it raw. His wife prefers women and moves on from him but they have a connection and remain friends. He still loves her and that must be so hard. Now that's how it starts but you learn so much about Damon, things he didn’t know and you will go through the 5 stages of grief. The story was insane but you learn to expect these kinds of things and I rarely see the twists coming which is why he is one of my fave authors. I loved how it ended. Watching it all unfold… I was so happy with how it all panned out. It was dark… It was terrifyingly gripping. The narration was amazing, I already ordered my physical copy! 5 stars If you know me, you know he is brill so check out my latest episode of my podcast with this taking a good portion of the episode. https://open.spotify.com/episode/4f2xMa6C90zn3ydk8RJFtO Thank you to @brillianceaudio for my gifted copy OUT NOW!!! #johnmarrs #deadinthewater #eastereggs #bookreview #bookalorian #bookblog #bookishblog #bookreader #readerofig #readerblog

Book review - Fiction - Paperback ARC - Magical Realism - Contemporary - Fantasy I just finished The Unwritten Rules of Magic by Harper Ross and here are my musings. Emerson feels out of control of her life and when her father, who was suffering from Alzheimer's passes away.. She feels unmoored. All she wants is his typewriter, the one he told her never to touch. She finds typing him letters helps her to process. To become happier. Her mother wants to move on but is living at the bottom of a bottle. The more she helps her mother pack up her life, the more disturbing things she uncovers she knows she should destroy the typewriter. The object that made things worse not better and the devastating effects it has had on their lives. I admit, I did not read the synopsis and I was a tad disappointed that there was not more magic in the book. We only really see the magical realism in the pages her father has written. This book is loaded with grief and trauma. I wish it had been titled differently but it does not change how I feel about the book. It was beautifully heartbreaking. The story was told with such finesse I read it in one sitting. It all hinges around the death of an author, Emerson’s father and how his success thanks to the typewriter destroyed his family. It was so well written and I was hooked. I wanted to know what path Emerson would choose. I was so bloody invested I stayed up past my bed time. Yeah, dedicated or what! I liked how it ended. It gave me all the feels. It was just what I needed to be honest and the pacing was great!! If you love magical realism with family drama and grief.. This is the one for you! 4 stars Thank you to @stmartinspress #smpearlyreaders for my gifted copy #bookblog #bookish #readerblog #bookishblog #blog #fantasyreader #bookpod #bookinfluencer

Book review - Fiction - Audiobook - thriller - Mystery - romance Call Me Anytime by Max Monroe Hannah May needs a job immediately. She is taking care of her mother and a telemarketing job interview is something at least… Except it's not telemarketing… It’s a sex chatline and she is so desperate she can’t even turn it down.. Trouble is she is a virgin so she has no idea how to do this. What she doesn’t expect is her first call to be from a cop looking for a killer and doesn’t realize he isn’t looking to get off… Detective Dominic Dunn finds her oddly charming and there is definitely a connection but he needs to find a murderer and the sex chat phone number seems to be the key to finding out who is killing these phone workers… and Hannah could be next… I am not going to lie, I found the book quite comical! It gave it all to me… Intrigue, laughs… twists… danger… It was one of the best audio thrillers I have ever done. I liked Hannah… Her attempts to dirty talk at first just had me laughing my ass off!! Her mother has Alzheimer's and she thinks she is really in NCIS and I love the show too so I loved these moments as well. I liked the plot line with who is killing the chat workers. It was really clever and I really enjoyed it. I was charmed by Dominic and Hannah’s connection. Normally I don’t like the romance parts in books like this but this worked really well for me. I can’t find any cons in this book. Not one…. I already ordered my hard cover trophy and I highly recommend grabbing this one. 5 stars Thank you @netgalley for my gifted copy and @brillianceaudio #bookpodcast #bookishpodcast #bookpod #bookblog #bookalorian #goodreads #booklover #bookcommunity

Book review - Fiction - paperback ARC - YA Young Adult - Fantasy - Romance - Romantasy I just finished The Sun and the Star Maker by Rachel Griffin and here are my musings. Aurora lives for the tales of the Starmakers magic… She never expected in her wildest dreams to one day meet him… He can sense some power within her and entices her to come study with him… He is cold and he keeps her at a distance but that doesn’t stop Aurora from feeling the pull.. With the deadly frost approaching, can she shake loose the secrets in order to save them from an endless winter? I was super stoked to get a copy of this book. Look at it. It’s got a beautiful cover.. Amazing storyline… It has a beautiful and sweet romance with that grumpy sunshine trope we all adore. Those were only some of the amazing things this book has to offer. I really loved Aurora. She was so sweet and kind… I could feel a connection to her as a character. I was utterly charmed by her. Caspian really took time to warm up… See what I did there. HEHE. It was a nice dynamic. I liked how they were together. It was lovely. I massively enjoyed the writing style. It was well paced, and had a nice flow too. They painted such a beautiful picture and I was so enthralled. I did miss some of the magical system things… It was great but it wasn’t as indepth as I would have liked. I loved the enchanted castle.. SIGHHHH + Such a solid read. 4.5 stars Thank you to @sourcebooksfire for my gifted copy.
